There is some confusion about extending the grace period on the payment of the May 1st property tax installment.
The confusion starts with Assembly Bill A-3902 which states in part, “The Director of the Division of Local Government Services shall have the power to permit municipalities to institute an extended grace period pursuant to R.S.54:4-67 not to exceed a date specified by the director …”.
But if you look on the Township website you will see in part:Can a municipality extend the grace period for property taxes? No, at this time no authority exists that would allow a municipality to extend the grace period more than 10 days.
Thing are happening fast. Our website is true in fact, but it went up before A3902 was passed.
My inside sources tell me A3902 passed the Assembly on March 25, 79-0. The Senate will be taking it up soon and are expected to modify it. Then it goes back to the assembly. They are expected to pass it. The Governor is expected to sign it. It then goes to the Director of the Division of Local Government Services who will add the specifics. The Director will then send a notice to towns. At that time, it comes before Council.
We are editing the website to include language to the effect of, "Trenton is considering changing the law. We will update you when they do"
Nothing is ever easy in government or with COVID19.
This makes the total in Franklin 122
Sadly, there are two more deaths. The first individual was 67 years old who passed away on 3/28. The second individual was 85 years old who passed away on 4/1.
I do not answer questions about location of the positives. I do not have that information. For the reasons why please see my post on March 31
